What are national insurance contributions?

Answer:
National insurance is a scheme by which everyone pays into a pot via their wages, that the government holds on to. This pot is used to cover things like unemployment benefit, subsidising of healthcare, and other things.

If you never get sick and are always in work, then you'll never get anything back from the national insurance scheme. If however you have an accident and have to go to hospital then the national insurance will cover the costs of any treatment you receive.

Unfortunately this is not an optional scheme, everyone who is working pays into it, but it is there for the benefit of everyone.
