What are opinions on the best homemade Halloween costumes?

[Edit]

Answer

If you are making the costume for a young child, don't be afraid to change the fabric to something soft, like corduroy or light weight cotton. I once made a lion (used a pattern) out of corduroy and fake fur and the Phantom's cape out of cotton/polyester chintz. For a viking, we had a viking hat and his cloke made of corduroy, worn over regular clothing. A bunny made out of a sweat suit with the tummy and cotton tail made out of fake fur with purchased bunny ears.

The materials made the costumes a lot more comfortable whether it was cold or hot outside. They also were easy for children who weren't thrilled about wearing strange clothing. My youngest needed to recognize himself in anything he wore, but he loved being a lion or any other animal.
