Probably some Traumatising experiences for turtles would be too much handling, rough handling, sudden movements, loud noises, or another larger animal harassing them.
I have a pet turtle named Tilly and every time you pick her up, make a sudden movement on the opposite side of the room, or make a loud noise, she immediately curls up inside her shell, or if she is in the water she hides behind a rock.
Pet turtles would also be afraid of predators.
