Preserved remains are formed when the body of an organism is preserved and protected from decay through freezing, being trapped in tar, sap from a tree hardens around the body, or the body is put in a bog. (Like a peat bog.)

Fossils are remains or evidence of life forms. They are formed in several ways, for example an object such as a leaf can make a print in soft dirt that later becomes a rock. A cavity formed by a shell can serve as a mold to form a fossil. Or sometimes the living cells can become mineralized or replaced by mineral, this is petrification. Also organisms can be preserved by in volcanic ash, dry caves, freezing, or in tree sap that forms amber.
