Rats and mice are afraid of any predator. Nearly anything will eat them. Some predators that frighten them include cats, dogs, owls, foxes, and snakes. Rats are also usually afraid of humans.

edit:

Rats are also afraid of the letter "P"

If you say any thing with a "P" in it (Pizza/pop/parlor) they flinch/squeek/run. They are also afraid of balloons. I own three rats, and I'm being serious.

Are rats scared of cats?

Full grown cats are not afraid of rats. They will pounce on a rat and break it's neck bone in short order rendering them paralyzed and if the cat is hungry it will eat a rat. I'm sure this is true of many cats, but some are afraid of rats. The only time I ever had a rat living in the house, I tried to get one of my cats who was a great mouser to go after the rat, but she was afraid of it and wouldn't go near it. I actually thought that I had a mouse living in my cabinet, but it turned out to be quite a large rat. When I finally saw it, I put it into a container and put it outside. Fortunately it never returned to the house. Many years later my daughter had a couple of pet rats. Of course we made sure that that our cats were never alone with the rates unless they were in their cage. The cats liked to sit on their cage, which annoyed the rats and they would nip at the cats until they go off the cage. Eventually all except for one of the cats became afraid of them. The one that wasn't afraid is the one with with the big prey drive, although even he is cautious around them. I think that he might have killed them, if he had been left alone with them though. The cat with the least prey drive is the most cautious around the rats, although he is a large cat and very territorial and will challenge other cats, dogs or even a raccoon if it comes in his yard, so why is he afraid of the rats. Go figure.

Why cats easily catches rats though rats are fast to run and hide?

Not all cats will easily catch rats. Some cats will catch rats even though they are fast to run and hide. A cat has hunter instincts and will hunt their prey, they will stalk the prey until they catch it. Many cats will not go after animals like rats that can harm them.
