Pain but to stop that you have to exercise
Speaking as one who has been driving patients to and from hip surgery for last five years, it can vary from surgeon to surgeon, hospital to hospital. Generally, the nursing staff should be encouraging you to get out of bed and standing to some degree within 48hrs... That said, most of the patients I drive are discharged about 4-5 days after surgery and come down to the reception in a wheelchair. Very occasionally, they are self-propelled; but such people tend to have an iron will and the constitution of an ox.
Progress will be on crutches, and frequently patients are equipped with raised toilet seats, toilet frames and 'grabbers' to pick up items from the floor. There will also be a list of exercises and physio to be done daily, and this should be observed rigorously to help you see how far you have progressed (one extra rep per day...).
A positive mental attitude is always a great help. People recover at different speeds, so you cannot say when you should be doing what, but if you have a positive outlook and a determination to succeed - you will. A typical recovery period is about three months.
I will encourage you with a short anecdote: I took a lady for a 'first consultation', and the poor old girl had to have the front seat all the way back to be able to swing herself into the car. Movement was terribly slow, and I knew instantly she would be up for a full hip replacement. She was, and six weeks later I took her for her procedure. She came out after five days, looking worse for wear, but determined to get herself going again. She pushed herself to stick to the routine, and six weeks later I took her back for a post-op check. Apart from being slightly slower than I might have expected, it was impossible to tell that she was only six weeks after major surgery. The lurching was gone, and she got into the car without undue effort. Cheered the surgeon up, too.
Hope this helps.
A patient who has had a hip replacement will have a scar, normally on the outside/rear of their buttocks/ leg. They may also walk with a slight limp, called a Trandellenberg gait, to help swing their hip round (their outside leg muscles are often weaker).
