In a nutshell, they recommend replacing struts about every 80,000 miles depending on your driving conditions. I replaced mine at 135,000 on my 1999 Grand Prix. It started bouncing too much on the bumps and making a creaking noise on bumps.

What are the signs that you need new struts?

The struts on your vehicle are designed to absorb the bumps and dips in the roadway to give you with smooth comfortable ride. Worn or damaged struts can cause problems like tire wear and bad handling. You should check your struts at least once a year for any signs of damage or wear. Check your tires for signs of cupping, excessive wear on the middle or both sides of the tires. Check for fluid leakage from the struts. Walk to each corner of your vehicle and push down on the bumper and release. It shouldn't bounce more than once. Drive the vehicle and check for any signs of excessive dipping when stopping and check for drifting or swaying.

Will bad struts make the front end shake at different speed or is it another problem?

One reason a cars front end may shake is bad struts. However, it can also be other things such as a bad tire or even if an alignment is needed.

What are struts in a car?

Struts are much like what used to be shock absorbers except more expensive to replace. Bad/worn out struts will greatly reduce the handling and control of the vehicle. You can drive the car but it may put you in a dangerous situation. How much do you value your life?

How do bad struts damage a car?

Bad struts make the car handle different, and you may lose control at higher speeds,it also makes your tire become choppy and wear out faster, because the tire is not staying in contact with the road all of the time.

How do you know if your front shocks are gone on your 1995 Intrepid and how do you replace them?

It has Struts and not shocks. If the car is bouncing or floating whenever you hit a dip in the road, or seems to handle poorly, these are signs of worn struts. A leak in one of the struts is also a sign of a bad strut. Mileage is another factor. Struts today will last a long time, but if the car has over 100,000 miles, then more than likely the struts need replacing. As to replacing them, unless you have the proper tools and knowledge, take it to a pro. Serious injury can occur when replacing struts, if you don't know what you are doing.
