One way that cactus plants are important is through their aerating and holding together the soil. Another way is through their deflecting, dispersing and reflecting harsh, strong sunlight. Still another way is through their keeping the water cycle going with their effective, efficient conservation of available moisture, be it dew, fog, or rainfall. Yet another way is through their supporting local environmental and wildlife health. For example, they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

Cactus plants are economically important, because of their role in the built and natural environments. They addbeauty and color to the environment. They conserve water in the bright, drab, dry, extreme, harsh desert. They disperse strong sunlight. They give jobs to pollinators. They hold the soil together. They house wildlife, such as the Gila woodpecker [Melanerpes uropygialis]. They increase environmental health through the oxygen that they release through their breathing pores, or stomata. They provide food for wildlife, such as birds and rodents. The birds and the rodents return the favor by eliminating the seeds from cactus fruits. So seeds sprout into cactus plants over a much wider area than is covered by the originally fruiting cactus.
