The main reason that the system is so easy to use is that it works on a basis of 10s. For example, if you wanted to convert inches to feet in the standard American system, you would need to divide the number of inches by 12 inches in a foot and unless you are using a simple amount of inches, this can be quite cumbersome. In the metric system, however, if you wanted to say convert centimeters to meters, you would simply move the decimal because it works on the system of 10s (10 centimeters to a decimeter, 10 decimeters to a meter, etc.). These means that if for example you wanted to convert 2543 centimeters to meters, you would simply move the decimal two places to the left and you would get 25.43 meters.
