There are a thousand or more artificial satellites in orbit around the Earth. The first one was the Soviet Sputnik; the only one with a song named for it was "Telstar", one of the early telecommunications relay satellites. The very first communications satellite was called "Echo"; it was an enormous mylar balloon inflated in orbit. The idea was that high-powered radio stations on Earth would beam signals at the balloon, and the dignals would "echo" down to the rest of the world. It worked, too.

Now we have the International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope, hundreds of TV satellites, dozens of GPS satellites, 20-some Iridium satellite-telephone satellites, and countless others.

The very first communications satellite was the "Echo" balloon. Literally; it was a mylar balloon inflated in orbit so that radio signals could bounce off of it and back to Earth.

One of the first "active" communications satellites - and the only one to inspire a rock and roll song! - was "Telstar". Telstar would receive radio "uplink" signals on one frequency and would retransmit them on a separate "downlink" frequency, as most comsats do today.

Not just one but dozens of "Iridium" satellites, these formed the first practical satellite telephone service. Interestingly, one of the Iridium satellites collided with a Russian "Cosmos" satellite just last week, becoming one of the first satellites to be destroyed in an accidental orbital crash.

Possibly the most well-known of the space observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope was the first large astronomical telescope launched into orbit. Another newer one is the Spitzer Space Telescope.
