The first man-made satellite was Sputnik, launched into orbit in 1957 by the Soviet Union. The first American satellite was Explorer, launched the following year.

The oldest satellite still in orbit is Vanguard, launched in 1958 by the US.

There are now thousands of satellites currently in orbit, including communications satellites, GPS satellites, and the International Space Station.

if you would like to see a real-time 3-D plot of satellites now in orbit, check out the JTRACK 3D web site from NASA.

There are lots and lots of satellites in orbit around Earth, too numerous to list. And some satellites are secret. I am adding a link to a list of geosynchronous satellites I found. That doesn't answer anything

There are a thousand or more artificial satellites in orbit around the Earth. The first one was the Soviet Sputnik; the only one with a song named for it was "Telstar", one of the early telecommunications relay satellites. The very first communications satellite was called "Echo"; it was an enormous mylar balloon inflated in orbit. The idea was that high-powered radio stations on Earth would beam signals at the balloon, and the dignals would "echo" down to the rest of the world. It worked, too.

Now we have the International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope, hundreds of TV satellites, dozens of GPS satellites, 20-some Iridium satellite-telephone satellites, and countless others.

You can go to the NASA web site at the link below to see "J-TRACK 3-D" to see a real-time plot of many of the satellites in orbit, and where they are. You will need to have Java enabled in your browser, but it's fun to watch the satellites fly by. Click on any of the white dots to see the name of the satellite and its orbit.

The very first artificial satellite was "Sputnik", launched by the Soviet union on October 4, 1957.

The very first communications satellite was the "Echo" balloon. Literally; it was a mylar balloon inflated in orbit so that radio signals could bounce off of it and back to Earth.

One of the first "active" communications satellites - and the only one to inspire a rock and roll song! - was "Telstar". Telstar would receive radio "uplink" signals on one frequency and would retransmit them on a separate "downlink" frequency, as most comsats do today.

Not just one but dozens of "Iridium" satellites, these formed the first practical satellite telephone service. Interestingly, one of the Iridium satellites collided with a Russian "Cosmos" satellite just last week, becoming one of the first satellites to be destroyed in an accidental orbital crash.

Possibly the most well-known of the space observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope was the first large astronomical telescope launched into orbit. Another newer one is the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Anything in orbit could be considered a satellite. There is one natural satellite - the moon. There are hundreds of navigation, communications, weather, science/experimental and military/intelligence satellites in orbit. There are thousands of bits of "space junk" orbiting the earth at present.

How do scientists name places on the moon?

They take photos of the Moon by means of Artificial satellites. Then they integrate them. And after that they name places as like we do on earth. This is by S.S for JW's 2a class.
