Generally your first 2 years of college are for general education classes. Some departments allow you to take the first few classes in your major, but most don't. Get your college catalog and look under your department to see what requirements they have. Check them off as you do them. Most colleges follow the tradition that the classes you have listed in your catalog are the courses for you until you graduate. The only thing is that you have to stay in continuous enrollment for that catalog to still apply. Check with your college to see if they do this.

How can you advance as a marine biologist?

You will want to take as many advanced classes in high school as possible. When you have a chance to take electives, take science classes (biology as many as possible). You will then want to select a college that offers Marine Biology as a major or concentration and apply. What are the top schools that teach about marine biology?

Harvard, Cornell and Duke all offer Marine Biology tracks or specialization. If you can get into an Ivy League school, go there for biology even if they don't have a degree program. For schools that specialize in marine biology: University of Miami, University of Texas Austin, Boston University, Berkley, UC Santa Barbara, and University of Washington all offer top notch programs. However, getting a BS in Marine Biology isn't going to land you a career. You'll need a graduate degree to do research. It might be better to go to a school with a good biology program, and get marine biology experience over the summer (like at the local aquarium, or down in Florida/Texas with a summer research program). Be sure to get boating and SCUBA experience, as well. Then your good background in undergraduate biology, along with these summer experiences, will make you a good candidate for graduate school.

Can a microbiology major transfer to marine microbiology?

If your school offers marine microbiology, it should be an easy transfer. See what the course requirements are for a marine biology major at your school. Many of the introductory courses are likely the same with the junior and senior courses having a somewhat different focus.

What qualifications do you need to be a marinologist?

I assume you mean a marine biologist. You need a degree in marine biology. This means you will probably have to go to a school near the ocean. You can get basic classes in biology, math and chemistry at any college but you will have to transfer to a college that offers such a degree later. If you are in high-school take classes in chemistry and biology and some math as preparation for such a degree. Also many jobs in marine biology involve some scuba diving and snorkeling so you will eventually need to learn these skills as well.

What high school classes do you have to take to become a marine biologist?

A lot of math and science courses. You also need social studies and English. I personally take a foreign language. A lot of math, Physics, Chemistry, biology, advanced biology and even engineering. Other sciences can be useful too, but those are the main sciences you should take. Going above and beyond all your other core classes, can help too.
