The republican origanal platform was similair to the anti federalists. Small federal goverment, state's rights, low taxes, balanced budget, pro life, anti gay marriage, capitalist/non regulation. Obviously not all republicans fit the mold, but in general that is it. The democratic platform takes many opposing views, federalist, not high taxes but generally higher to pay for social programs that the republicans don't, balanced budget, pro choice, pro gay marriage, not socialist, but more regulations on business and banks, again this is a few of the main differences.
The Democratic Party was founded in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, sixty-two years before the Republican Party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists and modernizers. Democrats are generally more liberal. They believe in a larger federal government, and often implement tax plans to try to help the less privileged. They tend to believe the government must look for the greater good above the individual person in terms of well-fare and do what is necessary to make the populace more "equal". They assert that the values our country holds must evolve over time, and, therefore, tend to support such controversial choices as Pro Choice and gay marriage. Republicans are generally more conservative. They believe that the answers do not lay with the government generally, but rather with the people. They want less government interference and tend to believe more strongly in property rights and less strongly in well-fare rights, holding economic equity above equality. Many republicans are religious and tend to hold to the morals characterizing the Founding Fathers, which results in general disapproval of abortions and, for some, gay marriage.

The Democratic-Republican Party effectively ended in 1824, when it split into separate factions that eventually became the modern Democratic and Republican parties. However, the transition was not immediate, and it took several years for these new parties to fully crystallize and supplant the Democratic-Republican Party.
