A proverb is something that is rhetorical, and means something deeper than what it says. Some proverbs include:

  • "Love conquers all" - Love can transcend all difficulties and problems
  • "The heart that loves is always young" - Love keeps a person mentally sharp and devoted
  • "Desperate times call for desperate measures" - More difficult problems need more complex solutions.
  • "Everyone is a thief in his own craft"
  • "You can take a horse to water, but you can't force it to drink" - A stubborn person will not change his mind to do something just because it it put in front of him.
  • "Blood is thicker than water"- Family connections are worth more than friendship.
  • "The early birds catches the worm" - Advantage goes to the first person who arrives.
  • "Actions speak louder than words" - A person's will and intent are better understood by what he does (which is an honest historical account) than his words (which may be empty).
  • "All's well that ends well" - A successful resolution makes the previous circumstances irrelevant.
  • "April showers bring May flowers" - What seems undesirable today brings positive outcomes later. Also there is the literal meaning.
  • "Beggars can't be choosers" - When you don't have much, take what you are given.
  • "Better late than never" - It's better for someone to show up late or in less than perfect condition than to just avoid a situation.
  • "Better safe than sorry" - Take caution.
  • "Truth is stranger than fiction" - Literal meaning. Real history is very odd.
  • "Whatever will be, will be" - Don't plan for the future, but adapt as it comes.
  • "Where there's a will, there's a way" - If you persevere, you can achieve.
  • "One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel" - One bad person in a group spoils how others see the group.
  • "Barking dogs seldom bite" - People who make a lot of noise are usually full of fluff.
  • "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" - Do not betray a woman because they can be vindictive.
  • "A penny saved is a penny earned" - Not spending preserves more money for future use.
  • "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" - Handle money well.
  • "Haste makes waste" - Doing things quickly often results in inadequacy.
  • "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" - Having useful and tangible things is worth much more than things beyond your grasp.
  • "Cleanliness is next to Godliness"

"Too many cooks spoil the broth" or "Too many cooks in the kitchen"

    "Actions speak louder than words"

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

  • "Beauty is only skin deep."
  • "Children should be seen and not heard"
  • "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"
  • "Absence makes the heart grow fonder"
  • "Out of sight, out of mind"
  • "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach"
  • "Cold hands, warm heart"

"Make hay while the sun shines"

  • "Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today"
  • "He who hesitates is lost"
  • "A watched pot never boils"
  • "Many hands make light work"

"A stitch in time saves nine"

  • "A leopard never changes its spots"
  • "A rolling stone does not gather moss"
  • "Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises"
  • "Contentment makes the poor men rich while discontentment makes the rich men poor"
  • "Better face a danger once than be always in fear"
  • "Better bread and water in peace than cake and ale in fear"
  • "You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."
