[Edit categories]
|
An English written haiku poem is usually focused on nature (this includes seasons). The poem expresses a single feeling or impression. It contains three lines that do not rhyme. The syllables are traditionally broken up this way:
Line One: Five Syllables
Line Two: Seven Syllables
Line Three: Five Syllables
Some examples:
Rain like emotion
Expressive, cleansing the air
Now I need not cry
The clouds sing softly
Of division and limits
I do not listen
the colour of rain
flowing freely from the sky
relief to the land
snapping a dry twig
between thumb and foprefinger
I break the silence
(-- Ellen Weston, Moonset, The Newspaper, Autumn/Winter 2007)
Here are some examples of free form haiku very much preferred in various journals and zines:
The perfume
from her armpits --
yoga
(Mainichi Daily News, March 2008)
Though little
her snowman smiling
white backyard
(Asahi Haikuist Network, March 2004)
Pausing between bites
on the guava tree
the parrots
A cloud-eagle
curves to the edge
in the west
Sunny morning:
a snake slides through the fence
looking for a prey
Writes with strands of
watery hair on her bare back
a love haiku
(Lynx, XXIII:3, October 2008)
winter river
a heron takes the whiteness
into the dark
winter loneliness
sittingtogether
in our own thoughts
(Kala Ramesh, moonset, The Newspaper, Autumn/Winter, 2007)
Looking for shade
under the shapeless cloud
a rag picker
(R.K.Singh, Magnapoets, Issue 3, January 2009)
the endless sea
crouched between
two cypresses
(Bozenas Zernec, Prize Winning Haiku in 13th International Kusamakura Haiku Competition, 2008)
Whispering to her--
the spotted fawn
eyes the oustretched water lily
(David McMurray, Second Prize Winning Haiku in 13th International Kusamakura Haiku Competition, 2008)
Sea waves
roll from faraway
white peaks
(Ram Krishna Singh, Third Prize winning haiku in 13th International Kusamakura Haiku
Competition, 2008).
