Direct planting is planting where you want that plant to grow, i.e. sowing seeds in a specific area. Indirect planting usually refers to plants that need to be grown in seed trays and potted on before finally planting out - most temperature sensitive plants are grown in this manner, in greenhouses and conservatories, for example.

Indirect seeding is planting seeds in a starter such as a pot. Once ready, you then transplant the plant to a more permanent location, whereas direct seeding you plant the seeds in a more permanent location.
