The Diary of Anne Frank was written by Annelise Marie Frank who was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 12, 1929. For her 13th birthday, her parents gave her a diary which she called Kitty. A bit before this, the Frank family (Otto, dad; Edith, mom; and Margot Betti, Anne's sister, who was about four years older than Anne) went into hiding in the attic above Otto's work-place. They hid there for two years. They were found by the German Nazis and were sent to Concentration Camps. Margot and Anne were sent to Bergen-Belsen where the girls stayed together as much as possible. They were tortured (given little food and were forced to work or be part of experiments or so forth) and malnourished. Seven months after her arrest, Margot Frank died from Typhus. Within a few days of the death of her sister, Anne Frank died from Typhus.

The only person out of her family to survive was her father, Otto Frank. He was given Anne's diary and published parts of it in 1947. It was translated into English in 1952. Only recently (after Otto's death) was the whole of Anne's diary published.

Anne and her family are heroes for us all. By reading her diary we are able to at least try to see what horrors these people went through. More than that, we are able to change the future. If Anne were here today, I think she would want more than anything for that horrific tragedy of history to never again repeat itself. And we have the power to do this.
