Japanese people often do believe in religion. A majority of Japanese people follow the beliefs of Buddhism and Shintoism. In the modern days there are many that follow the Christian beliefs.
During the Iron Age, people followed a variety of religions depending on the region. In Europe, Celtic and Germanic paganism were common, while in the Middle East, religions such as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and various polytheistic beliefs were prevalent. In India, people practiced different forms of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Islam is the religion. Muslims are the people to practice/follow the religion of Islam.
The question is far too broad for a complete answer. Suffice it to say that Christians are people and as such some strictly follow, others mostly follow, while some few barely follow, and some never follow their beliefs. The 'how' part is just as variable.
Not evereone follows Islam, most people follow other religious beliefs.
