Answer
Well some may call it "the teen years" in which these years the kids are harder to handel but others may call it the may call it maturing in diffrent ways. The true answer is maturing no matter how your kids may act. But whatever you do don't i repeat don't spring sexual or questions that may or do make them feel uncomfortable.

You can do clues on a book that they might want, and the book could be the treasure.

We were having the same problem, here's what we did: Pick the spots you want to hide your clues, write some little riddles and leave a blank at the end. eg. for our five year old it was "Rub-a-dub-dub, three men __ _ ___." for our eight year old it was "Eight little sailors set out to sea, before they set sail the ship hit a ____."(tree)
We found that trying to find pre-written clues was a lot more difficult, it made sense when we already knew the destinations. For older kids I read a great bunch of ideas at http://www.allthatstuff.net/treasurehunt.htm . This article has some good ideas for more difficult clue writing.
