The force of gravity was first described mathematically by Isaac Newton; Newton's original description was later modified by Albert Einstein. All matter in the universe exerts a gravitational attraction toward all other matter, and even energy has some (generally smaller) gravitational attraction, because energy and matter are interchangeable according to Einstein's famous formula, e = mc2.
Sufficiently dense objects can undergo what is known as a gravitational collapse, in which gravity overcomes the strength or rigidity of all possible material substances, so the object just continues to contract under its own gravitational attraction; the result is known as a black hole. It was originally believed that nothing could ever escape from a black hole, but Stephen Hawking demonstrated mathematically that a certain type of radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, does escape from black holes. Even gravity can under some circumstances be overcome by quantum mechanics.
The motion of stars and planets is generally controlled by gravitational force. Just as the planet Earth orbits the sun, so does the sun (and everything that orbits the sun) orbit around the center of the Milky Way galaxy. There are also clusters of galaxies that orbit around their common center of gravity.
