A few gardening tips If you have yet to plan out your garden, enlist the help of a good book or two that will have good information on plants that will do well specific to your area. A good book for this is Sunset. Think about how much time you want to put into doing upkeep in your garden, and answer yourself honestly! You don't want to be overly optimistic and say you'll spend more time out there than you really will. If that's the case, you'll spend money on plants and supplies that will just go to waste and you won't enjoy your garden! Once you have thought about your commitment level, shop for plants accordingly. Get good quality plants; don't start out with something that's having to struggle for life!
Choose plants that are appropriate for your soil and climate. This will minimize the risk of diseases, increase their growth rate and minimize the watering and fertilizing and other work. Use soil amendments like compost. Try a humus or let tons of plant material decompose for that, unless you want to buy and import tons of potting soil. Always water things in very well immediately after planting.
The very best time to plant deciduous trees and perennials is in the fall. That way they have all winter to get their roots started and then in the spring they are somewhat established before the leaves begin to push. The worst time to plant is in the heat of the summer. As for problems, plants are living things, they are bound to get sick or have troubles from time to time. If a plant is having a problem, take in a sample to your local nursery; take along sick leaves, healthy leaves, and leaves that are in between for the best chance of the correct diagnosis. Nurseries will help you diagnose problems for free. Lots and lots of non-woody plant material on the surface, shredded or not, will promote a healthy soil & plants, inches thick if you can. But rake it aside temporarily before tilling; it will compact the soil if too much breaks down underground. Woody materials break down very slowly, so potting soils using bark or peat but not forest floor products are ok for container planting or tilled underground.
To prevent animals from digging up and eating your spring bulbs, you should have first, wrapped them in a thin layer of steel wool. It does no harm to the bulbs, as its shoot will push right through it. Dish washing liquid makes a great insecticidal soap when you mix it with water. Take 1 to 3 tablespoons of washing up liquid and mix it into 4 litres of water, add a tablespoon of vinegar too, put it in a spray bottle and mist spray the entire plant. Small left over soap bars can be utilized also and easily dissolved using warm or boiling water. Of course always remember to let it cool before applying to your plants. Soapy dish or bath water can also be collected and used effectively.
