This is a very deep question, which appears to be simple on the surface!!!

HOLY PLACES - WITHIN

The Ancient Rishis or Holy Men (and by men, I include women also) of India were true scientists.

They realized that the most sensitive instrument in the world is the human nervous system - far more sensitive than modern technology today!!!

They discovered that through yoga practice and experimentation they could bring about certain very definite results. That through correct application and control of their physical, mental and psychic bodies they could take their consciousness WITHIN the different Chakras or psychic centers which taper off the subtle nerve channel called Sushumna (which is inside the spinal column) and study the world both within and outside their bodily laboratory.

For these Hindu yogis their Holy Place of Pilgrimage were the higher Chakras where they bathed their consciousness in the refreshing waters of Truth.

To these yogis the Chakras were their holy stopping places and from there they would go out spreading their wisdom and manifesting outside what they had received from within - in Meditation.

These Stopping places are:

Sahasrara Chakra - top of the head

Ajna Chakra or Trikuti - between the eyebrows

Vishuddha Chakra - throat area

Anahata Chakra - Chest area

Manipura Chakra - Solar Plexus

Svadhisthana Chakra - Sex centre

Muladhara Chakra - base of the spine

HOLY PLACES - WITHOUTThere are many places in India regarded as Holy and where many Hindus gather to worship God. Many of these places are made holy in their connection with various Saints who had achieved God-realization.

Among those places considered Holy by Hindus are:

Vrindavan or Brindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India - site of an ancient forest believed to be the region where the famous Saint Sri Krishna spent his childhood.

Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India - In Hindi, Haridwar stands for 'Gateway to God!', 'Hari' meaning God and 'Dwar' meaning Gate.

Ujjain , Madhya Pradesh, India - very ancient city in central India.

Nasik, Maharastra state, India - great importance to Hindus in ways. Source of many legends.

Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India - Believed to be the place where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world.

Benares or Varanasi (Kashi or Kasi) - one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Many saints and yogis have sanctified this soil with there presence.

Shamballa - a mystical 'secret' holy place. Secret because one cannot visit this floating island without permission and it lies in the etheric planes over the Gobi Desert, which is a very holy place indeed! Only a few great Hindu's even know of its presence, and fewer still able to go there!

Mount Meru - The holiest place on Earth! This has been interpreted as being a mythical mountain in some vague place, however, the legend originally comes from ancient times and is based on fact. Meru is the center of Earth and refers to the actual intelligence of the great Cosmic Goddess, which dwells within. The supernatural height attributed to this mighty Goddess as a mountain is probably some ancient relation to its advanced spiritual height which is peerless and transcends all human conception.

Hindus have many holy places. Badrinath, Puri, Dwarkha and Rameshwaram are four holiest places for the Hindus. Other holy places are Varanasi, Rishikesh, Nasik, Pushkar, Ujjain and other places. Some rivers are also holy to them. Among them are Godavri, Yamuna and above all Ganges which the Indians call Ganga.

There is no single place which is considered 'the holiest' as in Christianity (Jerusalem) or Islam (Mekka). There are many places which hindus consider holy all over India. They range from the ice-bound Amarnath cave in North to the place made sacred by meeting of three oceans (Arabian Sea, Indian ocean, and Bay of Bengal) Kanyakumari in South, and the Dwarika, the city of Lord Krishna at the Western end of India to Guwahati, the abode of Mother Goddess Kamakhya in Eastern end. In between there are thousands of other places. The more important ones are Madurai, Nashik, Ujjain, Kurukshetra, Ayodhya, Gaya, Varanasi, etc.

The Indian city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is said to be the most holy city in Hinduism. It is considered by many to be the most sacred place of pilgrimage for Hindus irrespective of denomination.

The "garbha griha" (literally womb-house or womb-chamber), the shrine inside a temple complex where the main deity is installed in an area that is in a separate building by itself inside the complex, is the most sacred site within the temple complex.

The garbha griha usually contains the murti (idol or icon), the primary focus of prayer. In temples with a spire or vimana, this chamber is placed directly underneath it, and the two them form a main vertical axis of the temple. These together may be understood to represent the axis of the world through Mount Meru. The garbha griha is usually also on the main horizontal axis of the temple which generally is an east-west axis. In those temples where there is also a cross-axis, the garbha griha is generally at their intersection.

There are many sacred places for Hindus like Kashi, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Mt. Kailash, Tirupati, Kanchi, Rameshwaram, Shabarimala, etc. Which of these places is the holiest, depends on their sect. However, the holiest place for all Hindus is a virtual entity called Brahman, which unites all Hindus and make them move in the right direction.
