Machu Picchu is probably the most famous. It is the site of Incan ruins (speculated to be the site of the ruling class and training or educational grounds). A limited number of tourists per day are permitted to hike the Inca trail between Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Cusco, the heart of the Incan empire and hub of tourism activity in Peru, is at the heart of the Sacred Valley. Lake Titicaca is shared by both Peru and Bolivia and can be reached from the Peruvian side via the town of Puno (accessible by bus, train and possibly plane). There are guided day tours and opportunities to stay overnight with a local family on the larger islands of Taquile and Amantani.
