In "Beowulf," symbolism is used to represent themes such as heroism, loyalty, and the struggle between good and evil. The dragon, for example, symbolizes the destructive force of greed and the inevitability of death. Beowulf's armor symbolizes protection and strength, reflecting his role as a legendary hero.
Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Because ritual behaviors and tokens of loyalty are so central to pagan Germanic culture, most of the objects mentioned in Beowulf have symbolic status not just for the readers but also for the characters in the poem.
A symbol of the mead hall symbolizing what is good can be found in the very beginning of the story when all of the soldiers are singing happily. A passage that shows this is from lines 3-5 when it says, "…as day after day the music rang Loud in the hall, the harps rejoicing Call and the poet's clear songs, sung…". An example of a symbol the evil and hate of Grendel is shown when he goes to the mead hall at night and eats the sleeping soldiers and scares them enough to where they have to abandon their great hall. This is shown from lines 54-58 when it says, "To escape him, searched for rest in different beds, as far from Herot as they could find, Seeing how Grendel hunted when they slept. Distance was safety; the only survivors were those who fled him. Hate had triumphed."
Those are some examples of symbols used in writing to make the reader think beyond the basic words that are written. Near the end of the story a great hero, Beowulf, comes into town and kills Grendel and saves the good, the Herot, from evil once more
The beast represents the damage caused by prejudice.
King Hroðgar built the great hall Heorot for his people. In it he, his wife Wealhþeow, and his warriors spend their time singing and celebrating, until Grendel, who is angered by the singing and an outcast from society, attacks the hall and kills and devours many of Hroðgar's warriors while they sleep.
Grendel is also a monster sprung from Cain (from Genesis Cain and Able), a personification of evil, who attacks the hall by night and devours as many as thirty knights at a time.
The collar or necklace that Wealhtheow gives Beowulf is a symbol of the bond of loyalty between her people and Beowulf-and, by extension, the Geats. Its status as a symbolic object is renewed when we learn that Hygelac died in battle wearing it, furthering the ideas of kinship and continuity.
All the symbols in Beowulf are meant to portray the struggle between good and evil. The most obvious example is Beowulf's battles with Grendel and Grendel's mother. Beowulf represents good and the monsters represent evil. Another less obvious example is night and day. In the poem night is portrayed as the time when all evil things happen, and during the day the monsters run to their layers and hide.

Symbolism is used to, essentially, say something without actually having to say it. This comes in very handy in any kind of art, from the written word to the theatrical arts.
The symbolism in the Mason's involve rituals by tools of a medieval stonemason and is used to draw upon the principles they believe in. The 'all-seeing eye' is an example of freemasonry symbolism and what they believe to be a symbol of the supreme being.
The name of the sword is Hrunting. It was given to Beowulf by Unferth (lines 1455-1458).
