He settled for less than 54-40 for the Oregon boundary, contrary to his campaign slogan of "54-40 or fight." This might not be considered a failure, since he avoided war with Britain and made what seems a reasonable compromise. Many have found fault with the war with Mexico, as being a war of aggression, but few call it a failure.
At the risk of sounding flippant, Taylor's biggest failure was probably dying before he could complete his term. He could see that the unhappy Compromise of 1850 would not work and would no doubt have blocked had he lived. There was a scandal of sorts over the Galphin claim, but it was not Taylor's fault and he was taking steps to clean up the mess when he died. The Clayton-Bulwer treaty might have been worded more clearly, but that was the fault of the lawyers who wrote it and its vagueness may have made it more attractive to Britain. In short, he was a pretty good president without any serious failures.
Polk ignored the issue of slavery which divided the nation and led to harsh tensions within the country by the end of his administration.
he left the issue of slavery unaddressed and the country was in a severe depression under him.
Andrew Jackson was known as "Old Hickory."

James K. Polk was called the dark horse because he was a surprise nominee- a compromise after none of the front-running candidate for the Democratic nomination could get the required majority at the convention. (He was not a total unknown since he had been Speaker of the US House and governor of Tennessee and was supported by ex-president Andrew Jackson.)

His birth certificate was claimed fake. Some believed he was not indeed a U.S. citizen. Black mail, is what stopped him from running for his 2nd term.
There was also a dispute with Great Britain over the northern border of the Oregon Territory.
Polk was born in NC but when he was 10, he moved with his family some 500 miles into Tennessee, southwest of Nashville.
There were wild stories in the eastern US about the discovery of gold in California. Despite the publicity, it was faraway and many people were unbelievers. Then, when US president Polk spoke about it in a message to Congress, the unbelievers were now confident about the reality of gold. Therefore, one can give President Polk some credit for the mad rush to get to California.
President Polk and President Santa Anna. Generals Scott, Taylor and Kearny.
While James Knox Polk was in his presidency the liberty bell fell... (ive heard this plenty of times so it could be true)
The three presidents from Tennessee (and the years they served) were: Andrew Jackson (1829-1837), James Knox Polk(1845-1849), and Andrew Johnson (1865-1869). None of the three were born in Tennessee.
he kept all his promises, including not running for a second term.
