Viseu is the birthplace of Viriato, who is considered one of Portugal's most ancient heroes. Its churches include some of the most beautiful paintings by Vasco Fernandes [c. 1475-c. 1542]. We'll leave off Amadora, which is close to Gaia in population, as it might be considered an "extension" of Lisbon.
