Lisbon is the capital city, and is more than 20 centuries old. From its central location, it's possible to take day trips to Setubal, and Sines. Braga was founded by the Celts around 300 B.C. It's known for its textiles, and for one of Portugal's oldest cathedrals. Coimbra is one of the oldest University cities in Europe. Evora has so many works of art, and ancient Roman ruins that it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Faro is the capital of the Algarve, which is famous for its beaches. The city is picturesque, with whitewashed houses, and colored and molded chimneys. Funchal, on Madeira, is famous for the aroma of dill, which grows throughout the island. And its Cathedral has a native wood roof that's considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Oporto is the second largest city in Portugal. Its center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it's also world famous for its wine. Ponta Delgada is the administrative capital of the Azores. It's becoming famous for its innovative Portas do Mar, or Sea Doors. The project is supporting a flurry of building activity in the way of underground parking places, theaters, commercial centers, and casinos. Viseu is the birthplace of Viriato, who is considered one of Portugal's most ancient heroes. Its churches include some of the most beautiful paintings by Vasco Fernandes [c. 1475-c. 1542]. Lisbon [Lisboa] is Portugal's major city. It's the country's capital city and busiest seaport. It's located in western Portugal at the point where the Tagus River flows into the Atlantic.

Lisbon was already a 1000-year-old town at the time of Roman rule in 205 BC. It was captured by the Moors in the eighth century. In 1147 it was reconquered for Christians under Afonso Henriques [July 25, 1009 - December 6, 1185].

Lisbon is the major cultural, economic and political center of Portugal.

Lisbon (the capital) and Porto head the list with clearly larger populations. Via Nova de Gaia (or just Gaia) would probably be the third major city. We'll leave off Amadora, which is close to Gaia in population, as it might be considered an "extension" of Lisbon. You got links below to check facts and learn more about a country and cities with historical wealth that dwarfs anything in the West.
