Answer

There are a lot of myths surrounding hair loss. Here are some of them and also the truth behind them.

  • Males get their hair loss from the maternal side of the family:

While it is true that male pattern baldness is genetically inherited; to say that it comes from the mother’s side of the family is not. You can inherit hair loss from either your father’s or your mother’s side. This goes for both male and female pattern baldness.

  • Using a hair dryer will blow your hair right out.

This is not possible. Using a hair dryer, a little or a lot, is not going to cause you hair to fall out. What you have to be careful with though is to not keep the setting on very hot or hold the dryer very close to your hair. This may cause you to burn or singe your hair, which could it make it become weak and fall out.

  • Hair loss only occurs after the age of 50.

Hair loss can occur much before you hit 50 and can start as early as your late teens and early twenties.

  • Wearing a hat for too long causes hair loss.

No kind of hat or cap causes hair loss. People who always wear a hat take it off one day and notice that they have lost their hair. Instead of realizing that it was in due course of time, the hat gets blamed.

  • Excessive washing or shampooing results in hair loss.

Everyday activities such as washing and shampooing do not cause hair loss. They only help to keep your hair cleaner and healthier.

  • Lack of sex causes hair loss.

The best was saved for last. Although many people may want this to be true, it is just wishful thinking. There is no evidence to show that lack of sex can cause hair loss and also none to show that having more sex can make your hair fuller and thicker.

It is important that people educate themselves about these myths so that they can understand the real reasons for their hair loss.
