Some organisms have algae living symbiotically inside them such as Parmecium bursaria and coral.

Many food products contain materials derived from algae such as carrageenan, beta carotene, agar, and alginate. These chemicals are commonly used in ice cream, beer, toothpaste, gel candies, shampoo, soy milk, pet foods, and a gamut of other products.

Ice cream, coffee creamer, infant formula, salad dressings, mayonnaise, sour cream, and yogurt are only a few of the food items we use that contain algae. In addition to food, we also depend on algae for items such as toothpaste, paint, and cosmetic products such as lip stick. You might not find the ingredient "Algae" on the label. However common derivatives of them such as carragreenans, and alginates are used in a lot of everyday products we use.

  • Food thickeners
