First, to make sure you don't have serious back injury, talk to your doctor.

Next: NO TWISTING!!! Don't twist your back when you have back pain.

The following exercises should be performed at least 3 times a day until you start feeling better, then keep it up to prevent the back pain from returning.

* Get down on your hands and knees, arch your back up as far as you can (without pain), then arch down, sticking your stomach down as far as you can (without pain). Hold each position for two or three seconds. Repeat at least ten times. * Lie flat on your back. Pull one knee up to your chest or as far as you can without pain, hold for two seconds then let it down and pull the other knee up. Repeat at least ten times. * Once you get to the point that you can pull your knees all the way to your chest one at a time without back discomfort, pull BOTH knees at the same time. Repeat at least ten times. * Once you get to the point that you can pull BOTH knees without pain, start crunches. Go light at first, hands behind your head, lift your head and start pulling your back up but once it starts to hurt, don't go any further. You want to eventually get to the point that you pull your shoulder-blades off the floor, but don't do a complete "sit-up" since that can cause damage and make the back pain worse. Do at least ten crunches and more once you get to the point that the pain is controlled.

Basically, most back pain is caused by muscles that are trying to compensate for inflamed areas of the spine, and the muscles go into spasm resulting in the pain. The muscles need to be stretched and strengthened without causing additional damage to the spine.

Strengthening muscles: Exercise can help strengthen the muscles in your back, abdomen, and legs, which can provide better support to your spine and alleviate strain on your lower back. Strengthening exercises, such as core exercises, can improve your posture and reduce the risk of developing lower back pain.

Increasing flexibility: Stretching exercises can help improve flexibility in your muscles and joints, including those in your lower back. Increased flexibility can reduce muscle tension and stiffness, which can contribute to lower back pain.

Enhancing blood flow: Physical activity promotes blood flow to muscles and soft tissues, including those in the lower back. Improved blood flow can help deliver essential nutrients and oxygen to the muscles, which can aid in their recovery and reduce pain.

Promoting endorphin release: Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals produced by the body. Endorphins can help reduce pain perception and improve mood, which can contribute to pain relief in the lower back.

Managing weight: Regular exercise can help manage body weight, which can be a contributing factor to lower back pain. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the strain on your lower back and decrease the risk of developing or exacerbating lower back pain.

It's important to note that not all exercises or stretches may be appropriate for everyone with lower back pain, and it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional or a qualified fitness expert before starting any exercise routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or concerns. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual needs and circumstances.
