Many religious people believe God designed the family as including a man and a woman for various reasons. The chief among these is the furtherance of the human race in a safe, structured environment where the roles of a man and those of a woman could be jointly given to their offspring. However, there's much debate over whether this traditional family system exists anymore with single parents and gay couples having families.

More recently, Psychology and Human Behaviorist have discovered the unique contributions of each parent. Many who oppose same-sex adoption believe an adopted child in a same-sex relationship would never be given these unique character traits of traditional marriage partners, although there is debate over whether whether the evidence to support this opinion exists

Since adoption is a civil matter handled by the courts and governed by civil laws, religious arguments are irrelevant and will not be considered by civil authorities in the adoption process.

In the United States, we have separation of church and state. However, we do not have separation of busybodies from other people's business. In short, if you believe that adoption of children by same-sex married couples is an abomination, or some other hateful term, then by all means, please do not jointly adopt a child with a partner of the same sex. Problem solved.

Do gay people have to be married to adopt?

No. In the United States, sexual orientation is generally irrelevant for single-parent adoptions. There are some states where same-sex married couples can jointly adopt. There are states where unmarried couples cannot jointly adopt and same-sex married couples are legally considered unmarried. There are some states where single gay parents can adopt, but same-sex married couples cannot. There are also many states where the adoption may be legal, but there are no legal protections against discrimination by the adoption agency against gays and lesbians. In general, however, if you are a single gay person and wish do adopt a child, you may do so. Joint adoption and "step-parent" adoption are more tricky.

Which state prohibits joint adoption by same-sex couples?

Currently, Florida is the only state that specifically prohibits same-sex adoption, whether by gay and lesbian individuals or couples whereas Mississippi permits individual adoption but does not allow joint adoption by same-sex couples. Utah on the other hand, prohibits any adoption by a person who may be cohabitating with the guardian or parent but is not legally married. These laws presents a unique challenge to gay and lesbian couples wishing to adopt so it pays to know the laws in your state before you begin an adoption process.
