What are some religious beliefs in Egypt? |
[Edit] |
Islam is the dominant religion in modern Egypt. There is also a sizable population of Christians, principally members of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Prior to 1948, there was also a significant Jewish population, but almost all followers of Judaism have now emigrated to Israel.
In ancient times, Egyptians followed the Egyptian pagan religion, which was a quite complex, syncretistic religion with many gods. This gradually disappeared from the late fourth century onwards because of Roman imperial support for Christianity.
