An Elephant Snail is a large snail that lives in the ocean and in rock pools under large crevices or rocks. It is black in colour and has a white/ cream shell (it doesn't cover the entire body). It is a herbivore and eats algae such as microscopic seaweed off rocks using its rough tongue. Compared to a house hold snail, it is incredibly large. It basically fits into the palm of your hand! It can grow up to 15cm long and its shell can be as long as 12cm in length. ---- Also known as an Elephant Toenail Shell, it grows gradually adding layers to the outer most edges of its large, flat, white, shield-shaped shell. Scientific Name: (Scutus antipodes) Size: up to 110 mm Habitat: Common intertidally, the animal is black and very slippery. Southern Queensland to eastern Victoria.
