What are some superstitions in Spain? |
[Edit] |
Since Spain is nowadays the most anti-Semitic, anti-American country in the European Union (see OSCE pages on the matter) main superstitions in Spain turns around Jews. The idea of Jews as scapegoats in Spain is not new. Aragón, a northen province of Spain, tops the list of Spanish provinces whose typical gastronomy is full of pork dishes inherited from the past. While only a few Aragonians know, the reason they add pork and other non-kosher food to everything is Spain's anti-Semitic past. It's worth noting that while northern Spain's traditional food is not halal either, Aragón and other provinces do cook halal food as 'Aragonian'. For instance, the "Ternasco de Aragón" can also be cooked following an Arab-Aragonian traditional recipe, but not many Aragonians know where did it come from.
Nowadays, Spanish superstitions spin around international arena and Jewish complots. The traditional Hungarian superstition of the Illuminati has evolved into "te Jewish kabala" or "The Jewish lobby", a group that controls the banks and that explains different things from the war in Iraq to Spain's luck of progress in the Economic scene. While there are other superstitions 'Jew-free' (like the "Santa Campaña" in Galicia, a group of bodies with lights walking through the scapes of Galicia in winter) it's easy to find anti-Jewish thoughts in them too. Since the "Santa Campaña" will take you to Spanish versio of Hades if they find you, you can protect yourself by drawing a Star of David and staying inside them, apparently because ghosts also are afraid of Jews.
Anti-American feeling in Spain, also rising long before Bush and even Clinton thanks to Socialist Party inherent anti-American feeling, also crates legends worth mentioning as superstitions. Zaragoza hosted an American base long ago, but in vilages around the city is common not to drink waters contaminated by "la malvarrosa" an acuatic red plant inoffensive for human beings that according to the oldest, was brought by the Americans "to replace the population".
While Spain promotes itself as a bridge between cultures is a place to avoid, specially taking in count the level of hate inside the country. The only culture that seems to insterest Spanish government nowadays is the one controlling petrol.
