The black death

The black death was a deadly disease which left many lives at risk. Once people had caught the disease, big, black buboes which were dark boils on your skin that had blood and pus in and they became very sick. Symptoms were a very high fever and skin turning dark shades of blue and purple due to D.I.C (disseminated intravascular coagulation). The Black Death got its name from the dark purple, almost black, blotches of dark skin due to the DIC. Some people died the day they got it and some people were lucky enough to live a week.

Where did the Black Death come from?

The Black Death started in England in 1347, when sailors sailed in from the Black Sea. On their ships they had infected rats and when the ships docked, the rats scuttled off, into villages. On the rats were fleas, clinging onto the fur. The bloodsucking fleas were feasting on the rats blood all the way which meant they carried lots of germs. As the rats got into the villages, in search of food, the fleas would jump onto a human and poison their blood, from the rat's blood.

How many people died?

In most cities around 800 people died every day! That was a huge effect on European civilization. Sadly, 25,000,000 died.

How could you cure it?

Doctors tried their best but did not have much success in treating the disease. Most people died. The cures that the doctors used most was to sit near a fire, to sleep on one side and then turn over and to eat a lot of fruit and greens like cabbage. Although these did not cure the disease, they helped the patient to fight off the illness. Also doctors used a cup and placed it over the infected skin to suck out the blood if they had too much, or they used leaches. They also popped the black blotches of puss, which was extremely painful for the patient.

There were many superstitious beliefs that people thought helped them keep the disease away. These ranged from keeping posies of wild flowers to hitting themselves with chains! The lack of understanding about the disease and how it spread meant many people lived in fear and ignorance. If they had understood the need to keep things clean and to isolate the sick people they might have been able to control the disease better than they did.

Where did they get buried?

Because so many people were catching the disease, they ran out of space in the ground to bury them. The dead people could not be left lying around as that would have spread the disease even further. So, they were burnt or they piled the bodies up on top of each other and in between each body, they put a layer of Lime to make the bodies rot away quicker, it was like putting layers of cheese in between the pasta in a Lasagne.
