We start with the stem, and have different branches of languages from the stem. Each different branch may have sub-branches. There are many languages in the world, and some are more similar to each other than others. People speaking Farsi might find the French language easier to learn than the English language due to similarities in language like words, grammar or perhaps both.
The Romanian language has some Greek words (as many other languages) but these two languages are extremely different.

well, all languages have slang words. So, if you keep two groups of people apart that originally spoke the same language for 500 years or so, they'll have a lot of different words. If you kept them apart for thousands of years, they might have an entirely different language. Still, some languages are similar to each other, like how a lot of Spanish words are like English words and are almost the same, such as traditionale and traditional.
