Yes It is a common side effect for those who are sensitive and for those who have been on the pain medication too long. It is a general crawly itchy feeling that is difficult to manage because it is not localized.

Morphine can cause: constricted pupils, constipation, sleepiness, euphoria, increased pain tolerance, pruritus (itchiness), respiratory depression, nausea and dizziness.

Now, if a doctor gave a patient morphine for PAIN relief, then constipation & itchiness might be a side-effect.

If a doctor gave morphine to a patient to help with diarrhea, then itchiness & euphoria might be a side effect.

What determines a "side-effect" is based on the "Main-Effect" that is desired. Any effect beyond that is a side effect.

I was in the ER yesterday and got a dose of it in the IV. Shortly afterwards I got warm and then my chest got very itchy and then my palms did too. My nurse noticed I was very red on the chest and then blotchy so i got a dose of benadryl and that took care of it.

The symptoms of being allergic to morphine include:

Hives (a red rash with dark itchy raised bumps)

Flushing

Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat

Respiratory failure

Drastic drop in blood pressure possibly causing loss of consciousness

Chest pain due to coronary artery spasm which can cause an arrhythmia/heart attack

Anxiety

Loss of bladder control

Depending on the route of administration, the onset of these symptoms would have different timing. If the morphine was given orally, it would take longer than if it were to be given via IV.

An allergic reaction of this type is a medical emergency which would often require intubation.

The more common symptoms such as constipation, nausea/vomiting, decreased heart rate, drowsiness, and miscarriage (among many others) are not considered an allergic reaction.

The basic screening questions asked to determine if a patient was really allergic to morphine or if they just had a bad reaction to it is if they had difficulty breathing to the point of needing to be intubated or if they had to be hospitalized.
