You have a sharp, tight pain on one side of your chest with every intake of breath. For many people, this pain spreads to the upper back on the side of the collapsed lung. You will have shortness of breath, especially just after walking up a flight of stairs, and having to breathe hard after heightened activity will be excruciating. Sometimes, taking sudden deep breaths and listening to the sound of your breathing can reveal a "squeak" like sound that marks air leaking out of the lung. Laying back is painful on your chest and you will be most comfortable leaning slightly forward.

A puncture of the lung will often lead to a lung collapse.

The diaphragm increases the volume of the chest cavity. If air rushes into the chest cavity from a leaking lung, the cavity will fill with air. When this happens the lungs deflate and you get symptoms of shortness of breath and death.

The technical term for this condition is 'Pneumothorax'. Bubbles of air can be detected under the skin of the neck by a 'crackling' sound when the neck skin is pressed down and released.
