Chips are made of "chipped" potatoes (the potatoes are sliced lengthways, then these slices are cut into strips that are roughly square in cross-section; some shops that sell them may actually dice the potatoes instead), deepfried in oil for several minutes and usually salted afterward. They are a favourite takeaway food in several countries, and often accompany fast-foods such as burgers, pizza, chicken, fried fish and many other fried foods.
