I'm not sure about signs but the characteristics of a serial killer are:A person that kills three or more people over a period of time, one victim at a time, or a 'series' of killings. Almost always motiveless and virtually all victims are unknown to the killer*. There is a cooling-off period between kills, which differs with each individual killer. Jack The Ripper killed two women with slightly less that an hour between the two. Or it can be as long as several years. Denis Rader, the Kansas killer known as BTK, had several years between some of his victims.

As children serial killers exhibit certain behavious such as bedwetting after 10 or 12 years old. Firestarting, cruelty to animals, disreguard for rules and laws, petty theft and habitual lying. Although many children display some of these behaviours they don't grow up to be killers.

Many serial killers' crimes are sexual in nature, but without a doubt, serial murder is about control and dominence. Fueled by violent fantasies, the cycle begins. From fantasy to victim selection and the kill, then the cooling-off after the crime. There is usually an escalation of the violence if the killer is not caught. Jack The Ripper was in a murderous frenzy by the time he killed Mary Kelly in November of 1888.

The taking of 'trophies' is a typical behaviour of this type of killer. It can be one of the victim's possessions from jewelry to underwear or body parts. The killer uses these trophies to relive the crime later on. Sometimes these trophies are sent to police, press, or even the victim's relatives, giving the killer an added thrill by taunting law enforcement, torturing the families and terrifing the public.

These are two completely different types of killers. They do both kill , but one kills within time and has cooling off points this is a serial killer . While the other can kill many at time an go without stopping this is a mass murder or as you call it spree killer. Yet they do have some simiarities both kill and both have many victims .

Was Charles Whitman considered a serial killer?

Whitman falls into the group called spree killers. They are a completely different breed of killer. They are usually motivated by anger and revenge on a world that does not understand them and has treated them poorly. These types of killers a lot of times plan on suicide or death by police gunfire. They don't want to be taken alive. They want to 'get back' and then 'check out'. And usually these crimes have nothing to do with sex or sexual fantasies, which is the driving force with most serial killers.

Was Son of Sam a serial or spree killer?

Although it is common to see murder catagories used interchangeably the crimes are very different, not just in MO but in the psychology of the offender's mind. The FBI defines the spree killer as a person that kills two or more victims without a 'cooling off' period between kills. This cooling off period is what sets it apart from serial murder. Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz is a serial killer. His crimes were single episodes with weeks between attacks. With the passing of time it is common to see the cooling off period grow shorter. The cimes escalate, in some cases to a state of frenzy, and the killer may begin to make mistakes, leaving evidence that will eventially convict him.
