It depends whether the pain came on gradually or suddenly. If it came on gradually, it could be

1) Runners Knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)

2) Chondromalacia Patella - thinning of the cartilage on the back of the kneecap

3) Osgood Schlatters - most common in teenagers

4) Patellar Tendonitis - inflammation of the tendon below the kneecap

5) Arthritis - wear and tear of the cartilage and bone

6) Bursitis - inflammation of one of the fluid filled sacs around the knee

if it came on suddenly it could be

1) Knee Sprain - overstretching on one of the knee ligaments

2) Meniscus Tear - tear in the cartilage lining the knee joint

There are litterally thousands of possible causes. these could be being overweight and so putting added pressure in the knee, cartilidge sprain/damage, ligament sprain/fracture and lots lots more my advice would be to see a doctor and get refered to a physiotheropist.

How do you treat back of the knee pain?

Pain in the back of the knee can be relieved simply by placing your leg in an elevated position and stretch it. Massage it whilst it is stretching for at least five minutes. Drinking lots of water will also aliviated the pain, as this will diminish the fluid around your knee. Pain in the back of the knee is simply a build up of fluid. Exercise at least once every hour.
