The presidents advisors are called his cabinet. They help him with his decisions.

They also head the various federal departments.

The executive department heads appointed by the president are known as cabinet members. Usually, they are addressed as "Mr. or Mrs. Secretary" of each specific cabinet department.

The president's cabinet consists of the secretaries of the departments which report to the president. His cabinet may give him advice about their area of expertise. Also, he can call on experts that he would like to talk to, and most are delighted to meet with him.

The president has a staff who help him carry out his duties and some no doubt help write speeches and give him political advice as do the leaders of his party in Congress. The joint chiefs of staff give him military advice.

Historically, the Presidential Cabinet, made up of the Secretaries who head the major executive departments, would meet and give advice to the President of matters that needed to be addressed. More recent presidents have tended to depend more heavily on a large White House staff for advice.

The president has a number of advisers, each with different specialties or areas of expertise. In his second term, many of his advisers are new, although his Senior Adviser is not-- her name is Valerie Jarrett and she has been with his administration since the beginning. Among his current advisers, the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers is Alan B. Krueger; Assistant to the president on Economic Policy is Jason Furman. The Deputy National Security Adviser is Benjamin Rhodes. Daniel Pfeiffer is his Communications Director and assistant to the president on communications. Zbigniew Brzezinski (who has worked in several other administrations) is one of his National Security and Foreign Policy Advisers. Dr. David Williams (also a veteran of several other administrations) is one of his Health Policy advisers. And Peter Rouse has the title of Counselor to the President, a role where he helps to manage day-to-day White House operations.

The cabinet is what these people are called. They are less important as advisers than used to be the case. They also serve as heads of the departments they represent.
