A charter school is a public school that it is privately managed. That in and of itself can be either a pro or con depending on who's managing the school and on what platform.
The pros are:
They provide alternatives to the red tape and beaurocracy often associated with regular public school systems
Many times, charter chains can be managed by Universities who create the curriculum
They tend to have more resources (tutoring, mentoring, partnerships, sports, arts, etc.) which is attractive to many working or single parents who want more for their children but either don't have the time or can't afford the extras
Extended school hours
The Cons:
Studies show that while they generally outperform public schools, they don't outperform them by much
Because they are independently managed and operated, they have just as much flexibility to fail as they do to excel
