Government of India has set up institutions by the name of "Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)" which conduct under-graduate and post-graduate courses in science and technology. These are the best engineering schools in India. Originally 5 IITs were set up in New Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras. The oldest engineering college in India - "University of Roorkee" was renamed as IIT - Roorkee around 2000. IIT-Guwhati was set up in 1995. The most coveted course at IITs is the under-graduate program in various streams of Engineering.
