Actually, you will get a disruption in service in major market areas where your cell company does not own actual space on the cell towers. Read the fine print on your cell contract. Example: if you are an AT&T customer, and AT&T has a contract with Verizon, when you hit a tower that has only Verizon, and you are filling the last slot for service on that particular cell, you will start your call ,and keep it as long as a Verizon customer does not come along and need it. If that happens, any non-Verizon customer will get their call dropped in favor of giving the Verizon customer service. A cell company gives priority to their own customers. So while John-Doe_US-Cell claims to have major coverage in all markets serviced by contracts with many other major cell companies, you will get more dropped calls than anyone who has one of the major cell companies. In the area where I work, we have awful Sprint service, and they could care less. They low ball our government contract rate so we have no choice but take their service. Verizon is by far the best cell company I have every used. Even in the depths of the Grand Canyon I could see AT&T on one phone, but only make actual calls on the Verizon phone. I get dropped calls on Sprint every single day of the week, and I know exactly where the calls will drop, so I hangup when I head into a dead zone. When i had Verizon, I could have been convinced that cell companies were perfect, never a dropped call.
