said this:

The Whigs and Tories were British Political parties that developed in the latter part of the 17th century. The Whigs generally supported constitutional monarchy and the role of the aristocracy, while the Tories supported a stronger monarchy. In the world of colonial and revolutionary America, the Whigs generally supported the patriots and the need for the recognition of self government for the aristocratic families of the colonies. The Whig position was that Englishmen in the colonies should have the same rights as Englishmen at home and thus took offence at the taxes and other abuses of these rights for the colonists. The Tories on the other hand supported a stronger monarchy and believed that the King and Parlaiment had the right to treat the colonies as they chose. They did not believe that the colonists should have the same rights as English citizens did in England. Thus the Tories were generally loyal to the English throne and against the War for Independence.

The history of valentine?

Valentine's Day, before it was called that, was originally a pagan festival in the Roman Empire. On this day, young men and women were paired as "partners" for the next year at random. This often led to the marriage of these young people. When Christians were being persecuted in later times, a man named Valentine would illegally marry people who wanted to be together. Because of this and the fact that he was a Christian, this champion of love happened to be executed on Valentine's Day. When the Church tried to convert pagans, they would align their celebrations with some of their holidays in order to make the transition easier. Instead of calling the Roman festival of love and fertilization (celebrated near Lupercal Hill in Rome where the mythological twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were said to have been suckled by a she-wolf), the Church changed the name to Valentine's Day, a tradition that is still carried on.

What is the importance of studying regional history?

Local history involves two elements: Place and People. The first, "Place", means a specific bit of territory, whether a county within a state, a district within a county, a neighborhood, or one's own back yard. That geographic limit makes the detailed information sought or acquired, manageable. Without "People", we're not speaking of Local History; rather, we're discussing Local Geology or Local Geography only. Why is knowing local history important? Rather than addressing the grand scheme so often found in a textbook, it addresses the nuts and bolts of how we got to this point and, to a greater or lesser extent, how we might get to the next. The historian Thomas Carlyle said that history was the "biography of Great Men." While this may be true in some respects, Great Men would hardly achieve great things without Followers - the farmers, factory workers, and laborers who bring the dreams of those Great Men to fruition. Thus, Local History - the story of the people in a neighborhood, a ghetto, a town, and their personal links to the larger community of county, district, state and nation - becomes "history as the biography of the Common Man", and reminds us that history (and the responsibility for it) begins in one's own back yard.
