What are the World of Warcraft macros?

macros are used for alot of things in wow. for instance, if you make a macro that says

'' /1 )YnA( is now recuiting all level 20+. we are a fun leveling guild that hopes to start raiding soon, pst for more info or inv. ''

macros create an icon that everytime you click it, it displays that msg, or does that command, so really they are just custom buttons
