Cloud computing essentially refers to IT infrastructure spread over the internet from which space can be extracted to provide Infrastructure as a service. Also a combination of cloud computing and virtualization.

Cloud, or distributed, computing allows for multiple computers to be a part of a larger task. A good example of this is Folding@Home, where thousands of computers are working on the task of protein folding for disease research.

The advantage is that you can split up a task among the different computers, and then collect results.

Perhaps someone would like to give some disadvantages?

Easy implementation process: Cloud hosting offers you a readily available internet based infrastructure already there which can be made available to the enterprise in least possible time. The biggest benefit for the enterprise lies in the costs avoided in terms of the IT infrastructure minimization, non-requirement of a dedicated technical IT support and management team. Thus in a way cloud hosting allows you to have the same application and business process implemented without actually investing in the backend technical complexities.

Service "rented out" on "pay as you go" model: Cloud hosting model is essentially based on the principle of pay as you go model. Thus you are not penalized for the unused IT infrastructure that a cloud host may have but you are assured of the availability of the infrastructure at a very short notice. This implies that technology costs and risks are being shared by the services provider. This essentially means that the enterprise is absolved of the scalability and provisioning issues. Besides this the cloud hosting minimizes the barriers to entry for small business as earlier the same technological process required tremendous capital expenditure , beyond the capability of small and medium business.

Cost Per head: Cloud hosting services ensures that the overhead technology costs are kept at a minimum so that resources liberated from the IT infrastructure setup and management can be used for improving the business focus of the enterprise.

Accessibility of the application: internet cloud infrastructure ensures that your application is accessible from anyplace anytime and thus real time collaboration and sharing becomes a reality which can be leveraged for the enterprise productivity and efficiency.

Troubleshooting, Installation and configuring the software: cloud hosting also means that the application management is easy and optimal utilization guaranteed as the service provider installation, upgrades as well as monitor the application in real time in relation to software as well as customizes the environment as per the customer's requirement. Finally 24x7x365 IT troubleshooting is also provided by the service provider which further reduces the application process "Operating costs."

Advantages of Cloud Computing

  • Your files can be accessible anywhere with any device
  • Even if your laptop or desktop dies, your files are safe elsewhere
  • Data is stored elsewhere, and it does not consume computer's memory.

Disadvantages of Cloud Computing

  • The possibility that your files can be accessed by others
  • If the cloud service provider's server crashes, so does your files

If you want to get started in cloud computing, try Exvo, it's free service and you get to store files up to 1GB

Cloud computing takes a few final forms, but the basic thread that runs through all of them is that they allow users to access programs and services that are running on remote servers. Infrastructure, operating platforms and databases, and software are the typical targets of this system. While the basic concept has been around for a while, it is just now starting to make serious waves. Therefore, it is only natural for people to wonder about the advantages and disadvantages of cloud solutions. According to The Beckon, there are some clear pros and cons to the system:

Advantages:

  • Scalability. It's easy to increase or decrease server space and resource usage as needed.
  • Lower costs. When your services and programs are moved to the cloud, the host will assume responsibility for hardware issues and other technical aspects. They may even offer support for popular software. This frees your company from needing a large IT staff.
  • Collaboration is simplified. Everyone who needs access to a program or service can log on remotely from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Disadvantages:

  • Data retrieval. If you change cloud computing providers, you may find that retrieving your data is a hassle or even impossible.
  • Availability. If your Internet connection goes down, you're out of luck - your applications and data are out of reach.
  • Privacy concerns. You have to trust that your provider won't misuse the information you store on its cloud system. Also, if you switch providers, you have no way of knowing if the old one has really deleted your data.

These pros and cons show that cloud solutions may be a great idea for some businesses, while others will be better off with more traditional methods. You will need to assess your own needs to see if the cloud is right for you. See the Sources and Related Section for more information.
