Co-education is not strictly necessary, there are still organisations that separate boys and girls for religious or cultural reasons.

But to the extent that education is a preparation for adult life, it makes sense to have boys and girls educated together:- they will work together when they are adults.

The arguments for allowing boys and girls to be educated together are very similar to the arguments that Muslims and even mildly handicapped people should be educated in standard schools: it prepares such children to integrate in their later life.

Now a days co-education is considered important because it

1)Helps in better understanding of the two different genders,

2)Reduce shyness,

3)Helps to be perfect and to have good dressing manners,

4)Helps in the reduction of usage of abusable language,

5)Helps in the maturation of mind.

There are both Advantages and disadvantages to this, this answer will discuss both.

People in Co-Ed tend to have a broader outlook on life as they have been exposed to both male and female views on life and organisation etc.

People in Co-Ed Tend to know better how to react around a member of the opposite sex, a couple of weeks ago i was at a science and engineering competition and there were some boys from a single sex school when some girls walked up to their stand, they were so nervous it is unimaginable! Unlike how the previous answer suggested i think that this a contributing factor to teen pregnancies as gentlemen that have never been exposed to members of the opposite sex instantly make assumptions (as some girls were telling me just the other day!) But do not take that as red as it's just my opinion.

Co-Ed Students however do get very distracted by members of the opposite sex, and it is possible that their education suffers because of this. However this also applies to gay or bisexual students in single sex schools.

My experience of students from single sex schools is that they tend to be out of touch with life and very focused on their education but as soon as they are out of full time education they tend to stay out of touch with life and do not have the skills necessary to converse and relate with the opposite sex.

For some odd and dinosaurian (reason) the Church schools have long campaigned against co-education, and pushed their own various forms of either single sex schools, or highly gender-segregated establishements that were literally divided down the middle- there were separate entrances- Girls and Boys and this was not confined to Gym and swim classes where it makes sense. There are few practical reasons for Co-institutionalism. Prudent handling and management can minimize the alleged risks. It does make sense that Religious classes be gender divided. This was S.O.P. for Confirmation classes as late as l967 in Jersey City. The argument was made that Boys and Girls have different types of spiritual problems. ( some truth there). It should be noted there was a minor brouhaha when in the mid-sixties, the issue arose of Foreign Aid to certain countries in South America along the educational line. Trouble is, a good many of them practice Gender apartheid. It is literally cast into the facades of the buildings, and carried so far even lunch and recess periods- which are not even educational in the usual sense, are staggered, so boys and girls use the playground or cafeteria at different times! Got to be a bit of a point of confusion.

They are largely illusory and mythical. good Lord- you do not have anything like this in a public library, waiting room at a bus terminal, etc. ( I am talking about gender apartheid) The fears of a (Sex Riot) by some clergymen ( of all people, look at the child abuse epidemic!) are for the most part, unfounded. it is also expensive to run gender- separate schools- twice as many teachers are needed, there are other problems. Fact is, the mixed classes run more balanced and smoothly! the anti- Coed types are playing with a stacked deck.

Islam is not in the favour of open mixing of opposite sexes. The co-education system necessarily brings girls and boys together on a regular basis in a intimate setting. This may lead to the sins of fornication.

This is thre reason that co-education is discouraged in Muslim countries.

Islamic poit of view about co education?

Similar to Christianity, a strict interpretation of Islamic holy texts does not support coeducation. Not all of the Islamic faith support a strict interpretation of Islamic text however. It is best to approach this question on a case to case basis. A conservative member of the Islamic faith will most likely oppose coeducation while others might not.
