Coal is a finite resource. It take millions of years to replenish itself. With the limited amounts constantly being mined and used for energy, the resources of coal around the world are depleting. If mining continues, eventually there will be pretty much no more coal left. The effects of burning and using the mined coal for energy also cause pollution and are bad for the environment.
