Fossil fuels include oil formed out of organic matter deposited and decomposed under the earth's surface for a very long time.

Some of the advantages of oil are -

* Easily combustible, and produces high energy upon combustion helping in locomotion and in the generation of electricity and various other forms of energy;

* Widely and easily distributed all over the world through rail and sea tankers * Comparatively inexpensive due to large reserves and easy accessibility * Good availability * Inexpensive

* Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using oil, fairly cheaply.

* Oil-fired power stations are very efficient.

* An oil-fuelled power station can be built almost anywhere, so long as you can get large quantities of fuel to it.

However, the important issue as of now is whether there are more advantages than disadvantages of fossil fuels !

Some disadvantages of oil are that -

* it is non-renewable and fast depleting; * burning it releases carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas, that had been stored in the earth for millions of years

* it leaves behind harmful by-products upon combustion, thereby causing a lot of pollution; * mining of oil leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment; * Oil spills as well as evaporation and fumes pollutes the environment; * Used oil is difficult to recycle. * The price of oil is rising, especially if the real cost of its carbon is included. * Burning it produces carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming.

=== === The basic problem with coal and other carbon based fuels in not really that they release carbon-- it is that the carbon they release is not then quickly and efficiently absorbed by some other process, eliminating it from the atmosphere. We are taking unimaginably huge quantities of carbon, stored away for eons, and pouring it into the air. It will remain there for eons more, until the earth goes through more of its own balancing cycles. http://sciencedata.blogspot.com/

Advantages:

  • It has tremendous power compared to just about any other energy source. One cup of petroleum can move a vehicle full of people for ten minutes at high speed.
  • It is easy to distribute
  • detergents
  • fertilisers/pesticides
  • makeup
  • CD coating
  • food additives
  • dyes
  • plasters
  • medicine (acetylsalicylic acid (ASA))
  • synthetic rubber (shoes, mats, car tyres etc)
  • extremely powerful fuel when burned (jet engines, planes, cars, trucks etc.)
  • keeps economy afloat

Disadvantages

  • It is now harder to find and hence more expensive. There may not be much left.
  • Whenever there is an oil spill there is usually a massive environmental disaster.
  • It is easy for criminals to hijack the tankers and bomb the pipelines.
  • It releases huge quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, both in its production and in its use, adding to the greenhouse effect.
  • Burning it in vehicles releases particles into the air that contribute to thousands of human deaths each year.
  • running out
  • CO2 producer (greenhouse gas effect - global warming)
  • pollution
  • spills (e.g. America + bp spill)
  • too dependant on it
  • some fractions poisonous

+++

Disadvantages - any man-made structure or service, not just those associated with the oil industry, can be attacked by criminals.

"Some fractions poisonous" - yes they are, but so are some metals and a huge range of materials more directly derived from plants and animals.

Oil is a fossil fuel formed out of organic matter deposited and decomposed under the earth's surface for millions of years.

Some of the advantages of oil are:

  • Oil is an extremely powerful energy source when it is burned. No other fuel can move a vehicle at such speed and for such a distance as a cup of petroleum can.
  • Easily combustible, and produces high energy upon combustion helping in locomotion and in the generation of electricity and various other forms of energy;
  • The world's economy would not function as efficiently if countries halted oil production, import and export.
  • Also oil is in everyday products like plastics of all kinds, lotion, makeup etc.
  • Oil is easier to mine because as a liquid, it will flow through pipes, which makes it easier to transport.
  • Widely and easily distributed all over the world through pipe, rail, road and sea tankers
  • Comparatively inexpensive due to fairly large reserves and easy accessibility
  • Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using oil, fairly cheaply.
  • An efficient oil-fuelled power station can be built almost anywhere, so long as you can get large quantities of fuel to it.
  • It can run day and night, providing a constant source of power, unlike solar and wind power which are intermittent.
  • Is relatively stable
  • Oil has high heating value
  • No new technology needed to use it
  • Oil is arguably the planet's most adjustable fossil fuel.
  • Oil is cleaner and easier to burn than coal.

Some disadvantages of oil are:

  • Oil contributes to global warming in its production and use by releasing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.
  • Burning oil releases extra carbon dioxide, that has been stored in the earth for millions of years. This is disrupting the natural carbon cycle.
  • It also causes strong localized effects. CO, NOx, and particulates damage local ecosystems and directly impact life expectancy (think smog, Asthma, etc.).
  • Separating and refining oil takes a lot of energy. Oil exists as a mixture of hydrocarbons with traces of sulfur and other compounds. For useful products to be separated from crude oil, it must be treated with "thermal cracking," an energy-intensive process that separates and reforms different hydrocarbons based on their boiling point.
  • Incomplete combustion of oil can form carbon monoxide, which if allowed to build up in a confined area can prove to be fatal.
  • The insecurity of oil in the global financial market is a distinct disadvantage for countries that rely on oil.
  • Oil is running out. Although new oil deposits are being discovered every year, the amount does not equal to level of annual consumption. So the little that is left continues to rise in price. The price will continue to rise, especially if the real cost of its carbon is included.
  • It is now harder to find and hence more expensive.
  • mining of oil leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment;
  • Whenever there is an oil spill there is usually a massive environmental disaster. Evaporation and fumes also pollute the environment;
  • Tankers and pipelines are vulnerable to terrorists and other criminals.
  • Used oil is difficult to clean and recycle.

A:Advantages of oil: It is cheap, portable and has a high energy content. When used for electricity generation, it can meet sudden changes in demand more readily than coal-fired generators, which have a long startup period.

Disadvantages of oil: Dependence on oil can have geopolitical impacts, for example the risk of disruptions to supply. As with coal, burning oil results in emission of carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect. Compared to burning natural gas, oil produces more carbon dioxide, since gas is converted partly into carbon dioxode and partly into water.

A:Pros
  • a large amount of products have oil or oil byproducts in them (toothpaste, asphalt, plastic containers, etc.)
  • provides many jobs
  • creates a mass amount of revenue

Cons

  • not necessarily good for the environment
  • oil spills, such as the one cause by BP have a huge negative impact on the natural environment
  • wars have been fought over oil

These are just some examples of pros and cons.

Oil

Good= 1. It is a natural resource 2. Easy to use

Bad = 1. Oil spills 2. Gas from oil pollutes the air

i guess it's how you look at it. To me, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The advantages of oil, to me, is gas for our cars, heat in our houses, lubrication for multiple types of engines, generators, gears, etc.. Unfortunately all of those things have made us too dependent on oil and the companies who make it. Oil companies have almost single handedly caused inflation. Their greed affects the prices of everything we purchase due to the fact that without their oil nothing could be transported, automobiles, aircraft, locomotives, and barges couldn't operate. Our homes would be too hot, or too cold. They know this, and every time they rise their prices all other corporations must follow or they wouldn't make it. Hope that this answer helped you in some way.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of drilling for oil in the US?

The disadvantages: domestic oil, if located, would not be ready to use for about ten years; oil consumption needs to be minimized, not expanded--Californians didn't take alternatives to the automobile seriously until the price of gas sky- rocketed, and that's a good thing because driving needs to be reduced; drilling locations so far include offshore in the Gulf, California and presumably any coastal area in the U.S. where oil is surmised to be, the Arctic Wilderness--and there are major obstacles with poor solutions. The advantages are the potential future ability of the U.S to supply its own oil if it reduces consumption to a sustainable level and the fact that the extraction of oil adds hundreds of thousands of dollars to state economies.

What are the advantage and disadvantage of coal relative to oil?

Coal has only one advantage relative to oil, which is that it is abundant and relatively inexpensive. Disadvantages include, it is more polluting (due to impurities in the coal) and it is harder to handle; oil can be pumped, whereas coal has to be shoveled. Coal mining is often more difficult and dangerous than pumping oil out of the ground. Coal dust creates the dangers of explosion, and black lung disease.
