The touch screen allows you to move the cursor and hit the graphical object on the screen that you want to hit / click. This requires that your screen is only for you, and it is not possible for the software to distinguish your index finger from a key you have in your pocket. So, you need to be able to turn it off when you do not need it. Say on a phone, it must turn off the sensitivity of the screen when it is your pocket. When you speak to someone, I keep my phone to my ear, and my early touchpad phones spent a lot of software on being able to detect my ear and ignore it. The result was that most just turned off the touch feature while I spoke on the phone, but then that was a nuisance every time I called a "Call Center" that asked me to "dial 1 for this and 2 for that".

Nokia solved this by "Gestures" - or composites movements. But the screens here was soft and vulnerable to scratches as the touch-sensitivity is really a mesh of tiny wires that is in top of the screen. So the "Gestures" worked fine with a new phone, but after 3 months...it became unpredictable, as loose connectors and wires, changed the "Gestures" into "touches", so the phone in the pocket could call a number all by its own.

But for a larger tablet that is not kept in the pocket, and stored safely - nothing beats a touch-screen. Recent screen development has also changed things a lot. It seems like they have managed to make a hard scratch-resistant surface that protects the fine mesh, yet soft enough to detect "touches" by a soft finger.

One huge disadvantage is the power consumption of the touch-sensitive screens compared to old LCD and LED screens. So old mobiles will last for a week or more on the same charge - typical standby time that exceed 360 hours / 15 days. Compared to the latest iPhone and similar that you have to charge daily - depending on use of WLAN as well. The AMOLED with grid consume a lot of power compared to LED.

  • Some disadvantages are that the user must be within arms reach of the display, it would be difficult to select small items,
  • it could have a possible retrofit problem (the touch screen must be fitted on the screen), and there could be possible arm fatigue.
  • It can caused you to feel a little electric shocks if you touch the screen with your wet fingers.
  • User's hand may obscure the screen.
  • Screens need to be installed at a lower position and tilted to reduce arm fatigue.
  • Some reduction in image brightness may occur.
  • They cost more than alternative devices.

Is a touch screen camera a good camera?

A touch screen camera is good to one that knows how to take care of it and use it properly I guess. This is because the touch screen ones are bit more sensitive compared to the non touch screen. One advantage I see in non-touch screen is that there is no accidental pushing of the button as compared to the touch screen.
